Ninja news - six disciplines emerge from the shadows - 1 Aug 2026
The Ninja discipline has expanded with six new techniques, taking the class from quiet-foot fieldcraft to a legendary final substitution art.
Four are physical disciplines powered by stamina:
Level 1: shinobiashi - silent footwork that sharpens stealth and makes an opponent's attacks less certain.
Level 3: makibishi - scattered iron caltrops that wound and spoil agility.
Level 5: metsubushi - blinding powder that stops and disrupts an opponent.
Level 7: kaginawa - a grappling-hook attack that hurts, binds and unbalances.
Two are mystical disciplines powered by magic:
Level 8: kuji - the nine signs of self-protection, strengthening faith, wisdom and magical defence.
Level 10: kawarimi - a prepared false body of shadow and smoke that takes the next damaging blow in the Ninja's place.
The disciplines draw on Iga traditions of shinobi-ashi, makibishi, kaginawa, concealment tools and Kuji Goshinbo, with kawarimi embracing the supernatural Ninja legends that followed them.
Use `nskills` to see the complete live ladder, and `help <skill>` for the requirements and detail of each discipline.

General News
Welcome back to Insomnia MUD. If you are returning player, much has changed, but much will feel the same.
Firstly, if you are not already, the recommended way to play Insomnia in 2026 is via our dedicated web client (http://insomnia-mud.com/client) - this is really, really good and a feature rich, modern way to play a MUD, without losing the traditional look and feel of terminal text based games.
Secondly, the game is undergoing rapid development and enhancement - faster than we we ever could 30 years ago - with rapid development tools and supporting AI, Insomnia as ever has more features, functions and capabilities than ever before.
Please use the BUG command and/or BUG board as much as you can - as well as post your ideas for features and/or capabilities on the main Adventurers Bug/Feature board which is one north, one west of the main town square - we can develop and implement features super quickly for you, so anything of interest, let us know.
Otherwise enjoy the game - it's a bit of nostalgia, but still super fun!
Phone-Friendly Adventuring Arrives
Adventuring from a phone has become much easier. The web client now offers a drag-and-release joystick for movement in all eight directions, together with six quick-command buttons for actions you use most often.
Each quick-command button can be given its own label and command chain from the terminal:
/button <1-6> <label> <command;command;...>
For example:
/button 1 Attack roar;kill all
This labels button 1 "Attack". Pressing it runs `roar` and then `kill all`, in that order. Button definitions belong to the individual character and are saved automatically, so their labels and commands return on later and new sessions.
The phone keyboard now stays out of the way while the joystick and buttons are in use. Tap the terminal when you actually want to type.
Tap the client's `?` Help button for full instructions, examples and limits.

Cooking Fires Open Across the Realms
Adventurers can now turn ordinary ingredients, butchered meat and freshly caught fish into proper meals at working cooking fires across the realms.
Place between two and four suitable ingredients into the pan above a fire, then cook the pan. An exact recipe produces a finished meal. If the mixture does not make a known dish, nothing is consumed: ingredients can be removed, the pan can be emptied, and another combination can be tried.
Fenella's Grocery, immediately north of Tin Street Three in Lucidity, sells inexpensive vegetables, fruit, butter, oil, spices and other pantry staples. Fenella also offers a changing selection of recipe cards. Studying a card records the recipe, although knowing a recipe is not required if an adventurer discovers the correct combination through experiment.
Fighters and Druids should take particular note. Fighters can obtain meat with the butcher command. Druids who wield a knife or dagger can use fielddress to recover clean raw cuts from a corpse. Either kind of meat can be combined with grocery ingredients to make especially nourishing meals. These substantial meat dishes, and meals made with caught fish, restore far more than ordinary pantry cooking and provide a cheap, practical way to recover while adventuring.
Working fires can now be found at the ogre camp, the bandit camp, Midsummer's rehearsal green, Boosey's jungle camp, the mountain castle courtyard, the Dolphin Pub kitchen in Slumber, and the White Bowl Cookhouse in Krasia.
Use help cook for the full set of cooking commands.

Path Found Toward A Far Southern Volcano
Scouts returning to Lucidity bring word that a way has been found into the far south-eastern reaches beyond the town's better-known roads.
The reports are cautious, as such reports should be. They speak of travel beyond the great lake, of country lying somewhere south of the jungle of Pondar, and of a rough pathway where the green world thins and the ground begins to remember fire.
Those who follow the hints may, with patience, find the land rising toward a huge volcano under a darkened sky. The route is not said to be friendly, nor entirely direct, but it is no longer only a smudge on old maps and tavern stories.
Several alarming rumours have also circulated concerning an Artrell alliance in the region. Responsible voices in Lucidity advise that these claims may be safely ignored for now, as no credible evidence of any such arrangement has been found.
Adventurers are reminded that smoke on the horizon is still smoke, stone paths can betray tired feet, and distant mountains have a habit of being nearer than they look once trouble begins.
